In search of bubblegum.

Continuing the musical theme...

I've been thinking lately about the perfect pop song. I'm not even sure what that means, except that I know what it means. I know it when I hear it. Maybe it's about three minutes long, maybe it has catchy hooks, many the lead vocal is alto or tenor. On the other hand, maybe not.

My nominees include:

"Good Vibrations" - The Beach Boys
"Vacation" - The Gogos
"Oh, L'Amour" - Erasure
"12:51" - The Strokes
"Wrapped Up in Books" - Belle and Sebastian

So, what are yours? Perfect pop song.

"Letter from an Occupant," The New Pornographers
"Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow," The Monkees (written by Neil Diamond, who probably deserves his own category)
"Kitchen," The Lemonheads

I personally find that hand claps are almost always a necessity. My mind is mainly drawing a blank right now. I'll have to think about this...

Tambourine helps too. I'm a sucker for the tambourine.

I really like that Lemonheads song.

This has also started me thinking about other genres: perfect rock, perfect dance, perfect alt.whatever. But right now I'm mainly thinking about perfect pop.

"Big Brown Eyes" by the dBs is my favorite perfect pop song: it's incredibly concise with not a wasted note, it's a song of desire and admiration, and it's got a lurching beat out of the "Ticket to Ride" school.
